STEVENAGE CHORAL SOCIETY
About the Choir
Stevenage Choral Society is a mixed voice choir with around 70 members of all ages and abilities. No audition is necessary to join our choir and we welcome anyone who wants to sing to come along and "give it a try".
We pride ourselves on a varied and interesting musical repertoire. For an idea of the general style of
music we perform, see below or view our previous concert history [click here].
Classical concerts have included Brahm's German Requiem, Mendelssohn's Elijah and Haydn's Creation and his Nelson Mass as well as Duruflé's Requiem. In 2015 we performed the Beethoven Mass in C and performed Vaughan William's Dona Nobis Pacem in the summer as part of the Stevenage festival in that year.
In terms of modern works we've performed The Armed Man and The Peacemakers by Karl Jenkins, Rejoice in the Lamb and Missa Brevis by Benjamin Britten, Zimbe and Ahoy! Sing for the Mary Rose and, not forgetting, Wassail! all composed by Alexander L'Estrange in recent years.
We normally perform a carol concert each year and regularly take part in the Stevenage Festival which takes place every two years.
We perform with both amateur and professional soloists using amateur/professional orchestras and bands for accompaniment. Venues for performances include the Parish Church of St. Andrew and St. George in Stevenage and also the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage. On occasions we give smaller concerts in the local area, and venues have included Holy Trinity Church in Old Stevenage and St Peter's Church in Broadwater.
We have also participated in four concerts in the Royal Albert Hall in London, together with other Hertfordshire Choirs, performing Britten's War Requiem in 1994; Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in 1999 and Verdi's Requiem in 2003. In 2007 we were involved in the Joint Herts Choirs event, the Grande Messe des Morts by Hector Berlioz.
For the last few years we have held a Christmas concert at Silkin Court entertaining the residents as part of our outreach activies. (Click here to visit our Outreach activities page)
In 2009 we hosted a "Bring and Sing" Messiah in Hitchin where singers of all abilities in the local communities could come and join us for an afternoons rehearsal and evening performance and in 2013 we took part in the Big Sing event organised by Just Sing, a local group of singers with whom we have a fruitful partnership.
We operate on a non-profit basis i.e. we are a registered charity (Registered Charity Number 284221).
